Ganges Water Treaty

The Ganges Water Treaty is signed between Bangladesh and India. The Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between Bangladesh and India, inscribed on 12 December 1996 for a time of 30 years (GWT, 1996), was observed as a major footstep toward the culmination of a longstanding conflict over sharing of the Ganges water. A long-standing debate exists between India and Bangladesh over the appropriate allocation, and development, of the water resources of the Ganges River, which streams from northern India into Bangladesh.
