Pakistan and the Climate Change
According to German Watch, Pakistan has been ranked in the top ten(10) of the countries most affected by climate change in the past 20 years. Pakistan is helpless to the effects of climate change which has occurred due to quick industrialization with consequential geopolitical consequences. Pakistan lost 0.52% per unit of its GDP due to climate change. Pakistan witnessed 173 climate-related events in 19 years. As things stand, the country is at corners for a much warmer world. The reasons behind this include the impact of back-to-back floods since 2010, the worst drought episode (1998-2002) as well as more recent droughts in Tharparkar and Cholistan, the intense heat wave in Karachi (in Southern Pakistan generally) in July 2015, severe windstorms in Islamabad in June 2016, increased cyclonic activity and increased incidences of landslides and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the northern parts of the country. Recently in 2022, the country has seen many floods in the city of Karachi and its surroundings owing to the effects of Climate Change.
